Dreaming of Apathy

It all started with a dream; or should I say it all started with a lifetime of dreaming. I always dreamt of being something more than I was, to ascend beyond the standard role of a cog in the machine that is society. I've always dreamt of driving people to be more than they are, to venture outside of their comfort zone and see the world for what it was and not what society makes it out to be. The primary problem that I've always faced in achieving this grandiose goal of mine is the fact that I, as an individual, don’t care enough to really do anything to inspire others or myself, nor do I care enough to break the machine that I'm a prisoner of.

Apathetic. Need I say more? It's the best single-word definition of who I am. But that's okay, because who isn't these days? The world that we live in puts up a good facade of caring about others, of loving the little aborted babies, but what exactly does this world do? They order videos and DVDs for twenty-five bucks off the internet of Bums fighting with each other and running head-first into Taco Bell drive-through menus, crashing through them and bleeding all over the place. Then the same people wake up the next morning and go to work at Children's Hospital and care for the sickly youth of America.

Fuck it, I have nothing positive to say. I have no aura of enlightenment enshrouding me right now allowing me to divine how we, as the human race, can rise up and overcome this apathy; the only aura I have about me is one of discontent and general pessimism that stinks to high heaven. Optimism died a couple years back and its future revival looks pretty fucking bleak.

“The world is burning now; can't you smell the smoke in the air? War, disease, and famine; these demons they are everywhere. Poets and Preachers and Politicians, they've all had their say; now we've got ten thousand years devoted to nothing but tomorrow and yesterday.” – Edward Kowalczyk

I love that quote, I think it sums things up pretty damn well. The best part about all this is that nothing has changed in the past ten thousand years. We act the same way that we did then, we have the same convictions and morals (Notably lack there-of) of that society of old. Earth is the embodiment of a vicious fucking cycle; Man conquests, Man discovers, Man learns, Man becomes enlightened, Man corrupts, Man destroys – Rinse and Repeat throughout all of history. Same story, new setting, over and over and over again until the Earth crashes into the Sun (or is it the Sun expanding into the Earth? Whatever).

I have nothing at all useful to say right now, just a myriad of tormented thoughts and forgotten dreams rushing through my mind. Maybe I'm not as apathetic as everyone tells me that I am, maybe I just care so much about this world that I've had to become completely desensitized to the hypocrisy of it to be able to live in it. Bah, Screw it.
